more against even more for · also came up at 23 more hearings where fewer than 3 public commenters took a side
Each dot is one hearing where 3 or more public commenters took a side. Across = share of those who took a side who were for the item; up = how many public commenters spoke on it (log scale). 100 public commenters at 34 hearings, 2024-12-03 to 2026-04-20: 46 against, 26 for, 28 no clear side. A side counts only when two AI readers (Claude Sonnet and Gemini) agree after reading the commenter's whole turn and the item's opening; an independent Claude Opus read agreed on 78 of 79 checked (lower bound 0.94, bar .90). Each hearing's speaker count and issue were confirmed by a separate Opus read. Staff, applicants and officials are not counted. This shows who spoke, not what the town thinks.

They're often our dearest friends, especially during the pandemic. I imagine we all had a lot of neighborly gatherings. I think the addition does not really change the look of the property. I don't think it impacts the feel of the neighborhood. Um, I, I, I, it just doesn't, um, seem like anyone's going to care once it's done.Janet RileyCouncilmember · Orinda City Council · Dec 3, 2024Watch the full meeting from 2:13:48

I'm happy for the project. I'm a longtime Lafayette resident. I used to frequent the Park Theater back when it used to. Show mostly foreign films, and I believe I saw the last film ever shown there. I'm happy for it.

I just think that moving forward with okaying a 7-foot setback means opening up the entire town of anything at this zoning to a 7-foot setback.

I have a question, please. One question that I didn't hear you address. Um, the neighbor's concerned that the house is 6 feet closer to their house. Um, and obviously the property is large enough. It seems like there could be, um, additional areas where that 6 foot could be compensated elsewhere. Can you speak on that?

One of the concerns in our community is underage drinking. Can you talk about what steps you would take to prevent underage purchase of alcohol at the convenience store?

For the record, I have no problems with the house. I have no problems with your ability to build a house safely, structured on a hill. The only concern I had was the drainage, and you answered that. So thank you.

Another item to just add, I guess, for context is, and I'm sure the city can speak to this as well, is we don't see a lot of applicants with the FAR asking for exception to that. And I think just for context, it is a very large ask that comes to the commission because it does set precedents.
